New Covenant Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America, a denomination which seeks to be “Faithful to the Scriptures, True to the Reformed Faith, and Obedient to the Great Commission.”
Faithful to the Scriptures
The Bible is the very Word of God. It is holy, infallible, and inerrant. Therefore, it is our sole authority for what we believe and how we live. We seek to be faithful to the Scriptures, primarily through expositional preaching of the Word.
True to the Reformed Faith
The Reformed faith can be summarized in fives distinctives, commonly known as the “Five Solas” of the Reformation
As mentioned above, the Bible is our sole authority for faith and practice. In all that we do, we must seek to submit to Scripture alone.
It is His electing love alone that sets us apart for salvation from before the foundations of the earth. It is God’s regenerative work alone that enables us to repent and believe. Our salvation is entirely dependent upon the sovereign grace of God alone.
We are not saved by anything we do. “Not the labors of our hands. Nothing in our hands we bring, simply to the Cross we cling. Naked come to Thee for dress. Helpless, look to Thee for grace. Foul we to the fountain fly. Wash us, Savior, or we die. Nothing we do can atone for our sins. God must save and God alone” (paraphrased from the hymn Rock of Ages). Faith is where we receive and rest upon Christ alone as He is offered in the Gospel.
Christ, who is the second person of the Trinity, fully God and fully man, two natures in one person – is the only ground of salvation for sinners. Only He has perfectly obeyed God’s Law in every thought, word, and deed – thus, fulfilling all righteousness. Only He is the perfect sacrifice for our sin, which He offered by His own blood – thus, fully satisfying the justice of God. His blood, and His only, can make the foulest clean. We are saved in Christ alone.
The end of all things is the glory of God. The works of Creation, Providence, and Redemption are all to the praise of His glorious grace. We are, therefore, called to glorify God in all that we say, think, and do that we might fully enjoy Him forever. To glorify and enjoy God forever is our chief and highest end.
For a fuller summary of what the Scriptures teach, please see our doctrinal statements, known as the Westminster Standards: theConfession of Faith, the Larger Catechism, and Shorter Catechism. You can find the Standards along with other resources on what we believe here.
Obedient to the Great Commission
Christ is the only King and Head of His Church, which is His body. The Church is commanded by Him to call people to Him (make disciples). Once they are brought into the fellowship of believers through baptism in the Triune name of God, we are to seek to teach them all that Christ has commanded in His Word. Primarily, we seek to carry out our mission by expositional preaching of the Word, seeking to teach the whole counsel of God, all by the power of Christ alone.
Presbyterian
“Presbyterian” is a translation of the Greek word which means “elder.” We seek to govern the church according to the Scriptures. Some of the clearest passages on church leadership are Exodus 18 (plurality of elders); Acts 6:1-7 (division of labor between two offices of elder and deacon, also congregational meeting); Acts 15 (church meetings of elders to make collective decisions for the good of the Church); 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and Titus 1:5-9 (officers are to be men of certain character); Hebrews 13:17 (authority and responsibility of elders to keep watch over the souls of the members); and 1 Peter 5:1-5 (elders called to be examples to the flock under their care). For more information on how we seek to govern the church according to God’s Word, see our denomination’s Book of Church Order.
